The Cherry Orchard - Feledi János-Feledi Project
The Cherry Orchard dance theatre performance evokes the pain and beauty of change on the edge of a bygone world, where past and present are intertwined.
The Cherry Orchard dance theatre performance evokes the pain and beauty of change on the edge of a bygone world, where past and present are intertwined.
The Feledi Project’s new performance reinterprets the motifs of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov’s iconic drama with contemporary movement and live jazz music, combined with the unique sound of the Peter Sarik Trio. The dilemmas of nostalgia, release, and starting over are not expressed through words, but through movement, body memory, and musical improvisation. At the heart of the story is an old, slowly decaying estate, whose cherry orchard is not just a backdrop but a densely packed symbol full of meaning: it reflects the beauty of the past, the changing social hierarchy, and the landscape of communal and personal loss. The garden—once a source of wealth and beauty—is now on the brink of an inevitable transformation. The characters express their inner conflicts and their emotional relationship to the garden through their movement. The illustration of their emotions, provided in the language of dance, amplifies the subtle spiritual emotions that Chekhov’s drama only hints at. The music, when played live, does not merely accompany, but engages in a dialogue with the dance.
The Cherry Orchard is about letting go of the past, the inevitability of change, and the hope of a new world—a deeply personal yet universal dance theatre confession. At the heart of the performance is the inevitability of the passage of time and the transience of human relationships. The cherry orchard is itself both a symbol of nostalgia and the possibility of rebirth, while jazz and dance together ask the question: can harmony be found in change?
